CYCLE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR YEAR 5 AND 6 STUDENTS

The Cycle Championship for Year 5-6 Students
Kelly’s Flat Reserve
Friday 2 March

This joint event with Holy Family School is being supported by QLDC, Racers Edge, NZ Police and Sport Central and is designed to help young cyclists be more aware of the skills and requirements they need before riding with traffic.  Please note that the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) recommends that children under 11 years old should not ride on the road unsupervised.  Wanaka Primary School supports this recommendation and requires all cyclists to comply with the law by wearing a helmet.  There will be no on-road riding with traffic, the course will take place at Kelly’s Flat Reserve.

Students will need to have a safe bike and helmet to take part.  If you don’t own a bike, we urge you to borrow a suitable bike and well-fitting helmet and have a practice ride before the championship day.

Young cyclists will receive marks for:
  • Safety/fit condition of helmet – we strongly recommend parents have bikes and helmets pre-checked by a bike mechanic, refer to parent and student information for details
  • Safety condition of bike
  • Practical skills/safety awareness
  • Road Safety Quiz for children
The information here is designed to help guide parents and their children to prepare for the Cycle Championship Day (Friday 2 March):
  1. Open or download the PDF document to view excerpts from the Code for Cyclists that deals specifically with bike and helmet safety, plus the practical steps needed to make left and right hand turns at intersections.
  2. Open or download the Parent and Student information which gives more details on the event – this was sent to all Year 5 and 6 students and includes a permission slip which needs to be returned to the school office by Monday 13th February.
  3. Click on the link to access NZTA’s Code for Cyclists for some useful safety information about cycling.
